DVP002 Genesis 1:27 (January 2)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

A short while after he created the universe, God made man. He put his breath/spirit into man which is something he didn't do for animals. Along with being made in the image of God, this is something which establishes mankind's special place in Creation.

Being made in the image of God doesn't necessarily mean that God looks like us, but something of his nature is shared with us. He has given us gifts of creativity and dominion over the earth, things which the animals do not have. He has also given us the unique ability to see his hand in Creation, what is called General Revelation, and he has given his Word (the bible) which is called Special Revelation.

The last thing we see from this verse is that God made both male and female. They are different, otherwise they would be called by the same name. That means the differences are intended by God and it is honouring to him to celebrate these differences. Neither male nor female alone is enough to accomplish God's purpose. This should give us something to consider when we look at how the modern world has formed it's gender roles.
