DVP005 Genesis 3:1 (January 5)

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?"

This illustrates the events which led to the fall of all Creation, and the same pattern which leads to our fall every time we sin. It always begins with the questioning of God, the questioning of what is right and wrong, despite a clear message from his Word or from our God-given conscience.

Satan, the serpent, also twists what God has commanded. In chapter 2 verses 15 and 16, God's command was permissive - they had every tree except just one to eat from. And this was a gift, so there was no reason to expect the gift of one tree let alone all trees except one. God has been abundantly generous already!

The serpent asks whether they are not to eat of any tree, a more prohibitive spin on the command, and subtly inviting the answer "no, that's not what God said" which sounds like they can actually eat of any tree. Yet Satan doesn't contradict God's literal command yet, just twists and misleads. Our lesson is to be careful to also understand God's intentions and not just what his words are. The "spirit" of the law is always more important than the law.
