9 "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest.
10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God.
God commanded these things as a way to provide for the poor who had no food or couldn't afford to buy food. He asked the Israelites to deliberately avoid taking everything when they were reaping what they had sown. They were to leave the edges and the missed bits (gleanings) along with the fallen grapes.
Incredibly, the poor were allowed to enter the property and harvest the leftovers. Imagine what that would look like today and you can see just how incredibly kind God is to command these things. Today, the owner would call the police!
Very often, the "God of the Old Testament" is made out to be harsher and more 'punishing' than the "God of the New Testament". In reality, it is the same God and he is unchanging. He has always been merciful and gracious to the humble.
