DVP057 Leviticus 19:32 (February 26)

"You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

Also mentioned in the laws regarding societal traditions, behaviour, and attitudes, is the treatment of older people. God commands that the people of Israel treat older people with respect, to honour their experience and wisdom, realising that those who are younger lack these things.

This gives something for those who are ageing to live up to, and provides a useful position in society for them as sources of wise counsel if they are too physically frail to work with their bodies.

This gives something for the younger generations to aspire to as they grow older, and is an extension of the command to honour our parents.

It is interesting that in honouring "the face of an old man" we are also to "fear your God". Who is the 'oldest' and wisest... God!
